Turtle Race Winners

July 2, 2008

Just like the “Perfect Storm” all the elements came together for the “Perfect Turtle Racing Day”. The weather was a bit too cold to swim back at the lake and just the right temperature to come demonstrate turtle racing skills.
It was so good that a near record number of racers came into Longville on Wednesday.  The total, 516 racers.  The only other date that beat that number was way back in 2001 when we had 569 racers.
The street was packed with spectators, racers and workers.  The registration line was long but the registration crew processed them speedily.

The hula hoop contests were unbelievable as some of the finest hula hoopers competed for the coveted prizes. The Longville Turtle Races do not allow for professional hula hoopers so everyone must be an amateur.  The dancers packed the street as they gave it their best.  The Chicken Dance Singers were melodic as they sang while a good hundred dancers competed. The singers were: Madison Knoll of Andover, MN; Claire Peterson of Sauk Rapids, MN; Anna Meyer of Durham, NC; Brendyn Scouton of Proctor, MN and Jacob Day of Lake Elmo, MN.
The YMCA dancers were the very best.  Leading them from the Turtle Mobile Stage were Bailey DeMarais of Monticello, MN; Lisel Elliott of Roscoe, IL; Domonic Lue of Mpls; and Zach Dilger of So St. Paul, MN.

The first turtle race of the day was the Resort Turtle Race. Eighteen resorts competed for top racing honors. They were: Birch Lane Resort, Angler’s Isle, DOK Holiday Resort, Quiet Woods Resort, Pine Haven Resort, Pine Ridge Resort, Thunder Lake Lodge, Little Boy Resort, Austin Swamp, Timber Trails Resort, Minne TeePee Resort, Huddles Resort, Rainbow Bay Resort, Woman Lake Lodge, Balsam Bay Resort, Chippewa Lodge, Family Tradition Resort, and Lake Haven Acres. Capturing the top honors as the fastest Resort turtle racer was nine year old Marckus Merfeld of Marshalltown, IA, who with his family were vacationing at Balsam Bay Resort.

The competition was fierce for top honors for the regular turtle races. Winner of the Grand Champion Race was thirteen year old Cody Dilger from So. St. Paul, MN. The Grand Slowpoke Champion was seven year old Amelia Watson of Minneapolis, MN
