| Turtle Races on the 4th of July is a tradition in Longville, and this year was no exception. With one of Longville’s most spectacular parades featuring many floats and the spectacular high flying dirt bike demonstration by Levi LaVallee on Longville’s main street, everything else seemed a bit anticlimactic. However, 269 racers capped off the day’s activities by participating in the many aspects of Longville’s turtle races.
Leading the Chicken Dance Contest and singing the chicken dance song were five young people who harmonized beautifully. They were Tea Baker of Lakeville; Jordan Boettcher of Andover; Marisa Skajewski of Medicine Lake; Megan Voigt of St. Cloud; and Sophi DeRoy of Oak Grove, MN. Leading the YMCA Dancers were Jake and Sara Spartz of Longville; Alex Burch of Remer; Alexis Baker of Lakeville and Mckenzie Newman of Woodbury, MN.
The first race of the day is the Resort Turtle Race and five resorts participated. They were Longville Inn, Kee-Nee-Moo-Sha Resort, Austin’s Swamp, Lake Haven Acres, and Camp O’ My Dreams Resort. The winner of the Resort Turtle Race was fifteen year old Lucas Gabrielson of St. Paul, who with his family was vacationing at Kee-Nee-Moo- Sha Resort.
Some of the fastest turtles of the season competed on the 4th. In the end, ten year old Marisa Skajewski of Medicine Lake, MN was the Grand Winner. Nine year old Danielle Lawrance of Savage, MN was the Grand Slowpoke winner.
