Turtle Race Winners

July 30, 2008

There is Tinsel Town, Broadway, Hollywood, and Main Street of Longville. What do they have in common? They are the center of entertainment for their area.
Turtle Races in Longville have entered the next phase as Main Street has been jammed, week after week this summer with turtle racing enthusiasts.  On Wednesday, 431 racers readied their turtlets (young turtles) for the race of their life.

When the dust had settled and the races had ended, two easterners had won the grand prize. Thirteen year old Ellie Locke of Columbia, So Carolina was the Grand Winner and eight year old Connor Kelly of Morton, Illinois was the Grand Slowpoke winner.

The afternoon started with the magical confusion of all the equipment being put in place from their assigned locations on the turtle mobile. . The registration line began to form at about 12:15 and soon volunteers, Rose Franta, Stan Johnson, and Anne Broshar began registering racers. Then volunteers Jim Felegy and Sue Meyer opened the ticket kiosk. Other volunteers, Geri Staley, Terri Felegy, Chuck Colberg , Brenna Robison, Tina Digre, Tom Staley, Elsie Hagen and Denyl Dugan   had by now finished setting up their games. Marge McDonald and Dodee Colberg had the big task of getting the prize tables ready. Meanwhile, “popcorn” Gordon Atzen was popping up a storm- over 190 bags when the last kernel was popped.
Back at the turtle mobile, birthdays and anniversaries were serenaded and celebrated. Mary Lou Austin and helpers Justin Wicks and Tiffany Schintgen, judges for all of the events prepared the circle for the contests. The hula-hoop contests began and there were so many participants that a 5th hula-hoop contest was added for youth and a second was added for moms.

Then kids and adults poured onto the racing circle for the dance contests. The famed chicken dance singers for this week were Liz Tabaka of Longville, Kaitlyn Shaver of Cottage Grove, Alex Bridges of Peoria, IL, and Jenna Hamberg of Eden Prairie. YMCA dances were equally popular and the leaders of this dance were Nick Harris of Chillicothe, Ill; Miranda Rich of Minneapolis, Troy Fetter of Pine River and Sara Spartz of Longville. All of the Atzen’s grandchildren, here to visit for the week lead the Hoky Poky dance contest.

Next came the “ Battle of the Resorts” turtle race. Fourteen resorts entered their representatives in the competition. They were: Hally of Little Boy Resort: Jaxon of Pine Ridge Resort; Alexa of Timber Trails Resort; Blaine of the Longville Inn; Katie of Tri Birches Resort; Austen of Ada Pine Beach Resort; Jenna of Deer Trail Resort; Ava of Woman Lake Lodge; Dayne of DOK Holiday Resort; Alli of Balsam Bay Resort; Rose of Broadwater Lodge; Nacie of Rainbow Bay Resort; and Erika of Pine Haven Resort.  The winner and Resort Racing Champion was four year old Rose Montoya of Golden Valley, who with her family were vacationing at Broadwater Lodge.

Many thanks to Camp Olson, YMCA for their help in set-up and teardown. Announcers were John and Sandy Weins and Gerry Broshar. Dave Wodrich monitored the street and Tony Ozark was the official go-to guy.
The next race is Wednesday, August 6.
