Perfect weather ushered in the 2016 turtle-racing season at the June 8 inaugural event. Racers and their families converged on downtown Longville to enjoy the turtle race games, contests and food.
After an afternoon of fun and racing, Emma Ginther, age 8, emerged as the grand champion. The slow

poke championship ended in a tie, with both Abigail Schmidt, age 8, and Ethan Daniels, age 4, claiming the title.
The Chamber Resort Race, with an additional six contestants, was won by Haydon Carr, age 7, representing Pine Ridge Resort
The Longville Chamber would like to thank all of the volunteers who make this event possible, especially race announcer John Weins and his assistants, Sandy Weins and Gerry Broshar, and race judges Kate DeLost, Charlie Stewart and Pat Boen. We would also like to recognize the volunteers from VFW Post 772, Camp Olson YMCA and Luther Dell Bible Camp.
Turtle races will be held each Wednesday through Aug. 24 in downtown Longville. Race registration and the contests and games open at 1 p.m. The Chamber Resort Race is held at 2 p.m., followed by the regular turtle races. Race registration is $3, which includes the rental of a turtle (or you can bring your own). Proceeds benefit community activities sponsored by the Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce.
