Member Spotlight: Deep Portage Learning Center
For more than 50 years, Deep Portage Learning Center has been inspiring people of all ages to connect with the outdoors through education, recreation, and conservation.
Founded in 1973 by passionate individuals and conservation organizations, Deep Portage has grown into one of Minnesota’s premier outdoor education centers. Their mission says it best:
“Through the exploration of woods, water, and wildlife, Deep Portage prepares and inspires learners of all ages to sustain and celebrate our natural world.”
Located in the heart of central Cass County, Deep Portage offers overnight outdoor education programs, public events for the local community, and summer camps focused on hunter education, fishing, outdoor skills, and environmental learning.
The Deep Portage Conservation Reserve spans 6,307 acres of public county land and provides year-round recreation opportunities for locals and visitors alike. Guests can explore over 10 miles of hiking and ski trails, an observation tower, bog boardwalk, bird observatory, interpretive signage, and more.
Deep Portage takes pride in being part of Minnesota’s lake country and values the incredible community spirit and support shared among local businesses, nonprofits, and civic organizations.
Community members are encouraged to follow Deep Portage on social media to stay updated on public events and programs throughout the year. Two signature annual events include:
- Winter Rendezvous – Held the third Saturday in January, this family-friendly event features classic Northwoods activities like axe throwing and curling on Bass Pond.
- Summer Rendezvous – Hosted each August, this fundraising banquet brings the community together to support Deep Portage and learn more about its programs and impact.
As a nonprofit organization, Deep Portage relies on donations for approximately 30% of its operating budget. Community support helps keep programs affordable for students, campers, and families while maintaining the unique recreational opportunities enjoyed by so many.
If you enjoy hiking, exploring, hunting, learning, or spending time outdoors at Deep Portage, please consider supporting their mission with a donation.
