Member Spotlight: Sherman A. Yochum VFW Post 772

The Sherman A. Yochum VFW Post 772 has been a cornerstone of the Longville community since its founding in 1935. Led by Commander Scott Septrick, the Post continues a long-standing tradition of service, camaraderie, and giving back.

Mission & Impact
At its core, the Post is committed to supporting veterans, their families, and the community. Through fundraising efforts, they provide direct assistance to veterans in need and contribute to veteran-focused organizations. Their impact goes far beyond donations—they proudly provide military honors at funeral services, loan out mobility equipment such as wheelchairs and walkers, host Memorial Day and Veterans Day services, and honor retired flags each Flag Day.

The Post is also deeply rooted in the Longville community. Members volunteer their time at local events like the Turtle Races and Clean Up Day, offer financial support to local organizations, and provide scholarship opportunities for area graduates.

Why It Matters
For many members, the VFW offers more than a place to serve—it provides connection. As shared by the group, it’s a space where veterans can come together, build friendships, and support one another. For some, like a Vietnam veteran who only began opening up about his service after joining, those shared experiences create meaningful bonds and healing that last a lifetime.

How You Can Support
One of the Post’s biggest annual fundraisers is the Poppy Drive, held the Friday and Saturday before Memorial Day. Local businesses play a key role by allowing members to set up outside their storefronts. Every dollar raised goes directly toward supporting veterans and veteran causes, in accordance with VFW guidelines.

Memorial Day Events
9:30 AM at the Longville Fire Hall we have a nice program that includes speakers and the Longville Choir

2:00 PM at the Remer Cemetery we have a brief program with prayer and military honors
