It was a great turtle racing day on Aug. 2 as 470 racers converged in downtown Longville to take their chances in the racing circle.
At the end of the afternoon, Elizabeth Grant, age 22, of Placentia, California, bested 458 competitors in the regular races to be crowned Grand Champion of the day. Kurt Maus, age 49, of Champlin, Minnesota, earned the title of Grand Slowpoke.
The additional 12 turtle racers in the Chamber Resort Race set a record for this summer. The race was won by Nolan Brooks, age 12, of Norwalk, Iowa, representing Little Boy Resort.

The Longville Chamber would like to thank everyone who makes the turtle races possible, especially race announcer Dave Adams, his assistant Brittney Wolters, and race judges Tarike, Chase, Aubrey, Katelyn, Charlee and Pat. We would also like to recognize the volunteers from VFW Post 772 and Camp Olson YMCA and all the Chamber businesses that support this event.
There are only three turtle races left in the 2017 season. Races will be held Wednesdays through Aug. 23 in downtown Longville. Race registration and the contests and games open at 1 p.m. The Chamber Resort Race is held at 2 p.m., followed by the regular turtle races. Race registration is $3, which includes the rental of a turtle (or you can bring your own). Proceeds benefit community activities sponsored by the Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce.
