August ushered in a blockbuster turtle race as 444 racers and their families and friends gathered in downtown Longville to enjoy the games, contests and food and compete in the racing circle. With 433 contestants in the regular turtle races and another 11 in the Chamber Resort Race, the total ties the previous week’s number for the second highest tally of the summer.
After all the races were completed, the Grand Champion title went to Austin Mellon, age 12, of Quincy, Illinois, who raced a turtle he caught on Swift Lake. Grand Slowpoke honors went to Lila Casserly, age 8, of Edina, Minnesota.

The Chamber Resort Race was won by Reilly Parkhurst, age 10, of Naperville, Illinois, representing Deer Trail Resort.
The Longville Chamber would like to thank all of the volunteers who make the turtle races possible, especially judges Charlee Stewart, Kate DeLost and Pat Boen, race announcer John Weins and his assistants, Sandy Weins and Gerry Broshar. We would also like to recognize the volunteers from VFW Post 772, Camp Olson YMCA and Luther Dell Bible Camp.
Turtle races are held each Wednesday through Aug. 24 in downtown Longville. Race registration and the contests and games open at 1 p.m. The Chamber Resort Race is held at 2 p.m., followed by the regular turtle races. Race registration is $3, which includes the rental of a turtle (or you can bring your own). Proceeds benefit community activities sponsored by the Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce.
