Turtle racers from across the country and as far away as Melbourne, Australia, gathered in downtown Longville June 29 to play games and race turtles on a beautiful summer day. After 315 turtles competed in the racing circle, Katie Hamilton, age 8, of Houston, Texas, earned the Grand Champion title. Chloe Rattai, age 8, of St. Michael, Minnesota, took home Grand Slowpoke honors.
Ten additional racers competed in the Chamber Resort Race, which was won by Callie Mae, age 6, of Wyoming, Minnesota, representing Longville Campground. At the end of the day, 325 turtle racers competed in the day’s event.
The Longville Chamber would like to thank all of the volunteers who make the turtle races possible, especially race announcer John Weins and his assistants, Sandy Weins and Gerry Broshar, and race judges Charlee Stewart, Pat Boen and Rachel Landensteiner, who is visiting from Las Vegas, Nevada. We would also like to recognize the volunteers from VFW Post 772, Camp Olson YMCA and Luther Dell Bible Camp.
Turtle races will be held each Wednesday through Aug. 24 in downtown Longville. Race registration and the contests and games open at 1 p.m. The Chamber Resort Race is held at 2 p.m., followed by the regular turtle races. Race registration is $3, which includes the rental of a turtle (or you can bring your own). Proceeds benefit community activities sponsored by the Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce.
